Asking a chain what time it is, from inside the chain
RUNNING PUBLIC
A contract on each network records what that network believes the current time to be, once per block, and writes down how far it drifts from the others. Nothing corrects anything. The record is the output.
Named for Ethereum's twelve-second slot, which is the only clock in the set that behaves like a clock. Every other machine in the Chain Reactor Room keeps time its own way. One runs a tape-drive metronome whether or not anything is loaded. One strobes at ten milliseconds and looks like it is standing still. One polls a crowd until the crowd agrees. TWELVE does not try to reconcile any of it. It writes seven disagreeing timestamps into seven separate ledgers and lets the gap widen. Fourteen months in, that record is the most useful instrument in the building.
